The Netherlands Dominates Relay Races
This weekend, the Dutch relay teams were on fire. They achieved a perfect sweep at home, winning all three relay events: the mixed, men’s, and women’s relays.
The mixed relay was a thrilling finale for the excited crowd. Teaming up, the Dutch athletes pushed each other to victory. Italy finished second, just ahead of the United States.
In the men’s relay, local star Jens van ’t Wout shined brightly. In a bold move on the final corner, he passed Canada’s Steven Dubois, who got caught in a slide. Belgium and Italy rounded out the podium finishes.
Canada faced challenges without their key finisher, William Dandjinou, who received a second yellow card in the 1000m. This left them in fourth place after a costly slip.
But van ‘t Wout’s brilliance didn’t stop there. He also shone in the 1000m race, featuring a high-stakes showdown with two Dutch rivals, two Canadians, and a Latvian competitor. The race was intense, and on the second-to-last lap, chaos broke out. Dandjinou attempted a risky overtaking maneuver, which led to a crash involving Felix Roussel from Canada and others. With competitors falling, van ’t Wout took advantage and raced to an unexpected solo win.
“My plan worked,” he said. “I knew I had to get ahead quickly and keep the pressure on William and Felix. It really paid off.”
Latvia’s Roberts Kruzbergs recovered to take second place, while Daan Kos from the Netherlands finished third, contributing to a strong outing for the home team.
Van ’t Wout celebrated his win by taking a bite out of his gold medal, sharing his joy with a cheering crowd of Dutch fans.
