LSU Women’s Basketball Beats Texas in Thrilling Match
In an electric atmosphere with 13,200 fans, the 12th-ranked LSU women’s basketball team defeated the second-ranked Texas Longhorns, 70-65, on Sunday. Junior Mikaylah Williams led the charge with a standout performance.
This victory marked LSU’s second consecutive win in the SEC, bringing their overall record to 16-2 and 2-2 in the league. Meanwhile, Texas faced its first loss of the season, dropping to 18-1.
Next up, LSU will head to Norman to face No. 5 Oklahoma on January 18, ahead of the Tigers’ bye week.
Significant Win for LSU
This win against Texas is especially noteworthy. It’s the program’s first victory over a top two team since 2008 and snapped a 17-game losing streak against such teams. LSU’s last win against a top five opponent was during the 2023 National Championship when they defeated Iowa.
The game drew the ninth-largest crowd in LSU history, showcasing an impressive home support.
Coach Kim Mulkey praised both teams for their tough defensive efforts. She highlighted the importance of ball control against Texas, saying, “Everything came hard in what you tried to do.”
Star Player: Mikaylah Williams
Williams, a native of Bossier City, showed her skills with 20 points, seven rebounds, four assists, and five steals, a personal best. She was a key player on both offense and defense, especially against Texas’s top player, Madison Booker. Williams shot well from the field, hitting two critical three-pointers.
Other Tigers contributed as well, with four players, including senior Flau’jae Johnson and sophomore Jada Richard, each scoring 10 points.
Strong Defense
LSU’s defense held Texas to just 25-of-57 shooting and forced 17 turnovers, the most Texas has seen this year. They also dominated the rebounding battle, particularly in the second quarter, where they gained a significant advantage.
Throughout the game, both sides struggled offensively in the first quarter, ending in an unusual 11-11 tie. LSU, however, found their rhythm in the second half, building their lead to as much as nine points.

In the fourth quarter, Texas tried to rally but LSU maintained composure, never losing the lead for over 26 minutes. A crucial three-pointer by Williams with only a second left on the shot clock secured LSU’s victory, while Richard helped seal the game with free throws.
