Tina Ahuja, the daughter of actor Govinda, has openly discussed her journey with dieting and body image. In a recent chat with Curly Tales, she talked about her experiences with extreme diets in search of the ideal body. She confessed, “I’ve tried every diet possible. I had a nutritionist since I was a teenager. I went from eating a diet of aalo ka parantha to consuming only 600-700 calories a day, which I wouldn’t suggest to anyone. Back then, I lived on black coffee and wore boho outfits with red lipstick. Now, I’ve learned to appreciate good food. I enjoy berries, smoothies, green juices, nuts, and I focus on getting quality sleep.”

Tina also reflected on her father’s past comments about her weight. She mentioned that while he no longer critiques her, he used to say things like, “Stay fit, you should look good; being overweight and unhealthy doesn’t look nice.” This pressure followed her since her teenage years.

A turning point for Tina came when actress Shilpa Shetty invited her to a film screening. After returning from a holiday in London, she felt confident, only to see a photo of herself on Instagram that made her realize she had gained weight. “I went from UK size 4 to UK 12 without even noticing,” she shared. “I wasn’t working out and was indulging in food. Now, I can teach others how to lose weight, taking it one step at a time. I’ve picked up plenty of healthy tips.” Her mother, Sunita, has always encouraged her to eat well.

While Tina has made progress and has a healthier relationship with food now, her story highlights the extremes many go to for weight loss and its effects on long-term health. It raises concerns about the pressure society puts on body image and the sometimes unhealthy paths people take to achieve it.

Extreme dieting can have serious effects, both mentally and physically. Ashlesha Joshi, a senior nutritionist at Tone30 Pilates, explains that severe calorie restriction can slow metabolism and lead to health problems. “When deprived of essential nutrients, the body tries to protect itself, making weight loss harder and potentially causing fatigue and cognitive issues,” she says.

Severe diets can also cause psychological harm. People often develop unhealthy relationships with food, which can lead to disordered eating patterns and increased stress. This creates a cycle of frustration that impacts both mental and physical health.

Quick-fix diets, like eating only coffee or drastically cutting food intake, may deliver short-term results but can harm long-term health. Joshi warns that these diets deprive the body of essential nutrients, which can weaken immunity and disrupt hormones. They often leave individuals feeling deprived, leading to overeating once the diet ends.

For a more sustainable approach to weight management, Joshi suggests making gradual and balanced changes. This includes adding nutrient-dense foods and establishing regular eating patterns to maintain energy levels. Mindful eating practices can help individuals recognize hunger and fullness cues, fostering a healthier relationship with food.
