Tom Felton, known for his role as Draco Malfoy in the Harry Potter films, is set to return to the stage in a Broadway production. He will join the cast of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child starting November 11, 2023, and will perform for a 19-week run until March 22, 2026. This story takes place 19 years after the original Harry Potter series, with Draco now a father alongside Harry, Ron, and Hermione as they watch their children head off to Hogwarts.
This marks Felton’s Broadway debut, making him the first actor from the Harry Potter film series to transition to this stage production.
Felton has kept busy recently, starring in They Will Kill You with Zazie Beetz and Patricia Arquette, and in Fackham Hall with Thomasin McKenzie and Damian Lewis. He made his West End debut in 2022, leading 2:22 A Ghost Story, and is set to star in A Child of Science at Bristol Old Vic in 2024.
Felton shared his excitement about returning to Draco’s character: “Being part of the Harry Potter films has been one of the greatest honors of my life. This role feels surreal, especially because I will be the same age as Draco in the play. I can’t wait to dive back into his story and connect with fans.”
Cursed Child is based on a story by J.K. Rowling, Jack Thorne, and John Tiffany. The play has undergone changes since its original opening in April 2018, condensing from two parts into a single performance that lasts under three hours. This shift was made to improve accessibility for audiences.
As the Broadway version continues to attract fans, recent statistics show that theater attendance has rebounded strongly post-pandemic. Reports indicate that audience engagement has grown, with many productions seeing record ticket sales. This is a testament to the enduring popularity of the Harry Potter franchise and the love for live theater.
Felton’s return to Broadway is not just a personal milestone; it reflects a broader trend in theater where beloved characters from film and literature are taking center stage, enticing both new and nostalgic fans alike.
