Columbia baseball junior Tomas Lopez has been chosen to represent Brazil in the 2026 World Baseball Classic. The tournament kicks off on March 6, with Brazil facing off against the United States at Daikin Park, home to the Houston Astros.
Lopez has had an impressive season, appearing in nine games with a record of 2-0 and an impressive 0.73 ERA. In 12.1 innings, he recorded 17 strikeouts. Notably, he struck out five batters in two scoreless innings during a crucial game against Penn in the Ivy League Tournament. He also played a vital role in Columbia’s surprising victory over No. 12 Southern Miss during the NCAA Regionals.
“It’s a great honor to represent Brazil in the WBC,” Lopez shared. “Playing the sport I love on such a grand stage is incredible. I’m grateful to do this for my family and roots. It’s a moment I’ll cherish forever.”
Lopez’s connection to Brazil runs deep; his mother was born there. He spent time in Brazil before relocating to Redondo Beach, California, where he graduated from Redondo Union High School in 2023. He is one of five college athletes in the tournament, alongside competitors from Czechia and the Netherlands.
In addition to the U.S., Brazil will compete against Italy on March 7, Mexico on March 8, and Great Britain on March 9. The top two teams from each pool will advance to the quarterfinals, which will be held on March 13-14 in Houston and Miami. The semifinals are set for March 15-16, with the championship game on March 17 in South Beach.
