Tonbo Imaging Secures ₹175 Cr Funding to Boost India’s Missile Technology Innovation

Bengaluru-based Tonbo Imaging is making waves in the defence sector, a field often dominated by larger players. This startup has carved a niche for itself with its advanced night-vision technology and has recently landed a major deal with Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL).

Tonbo Imaging is not just any tech company; it’s backed by notable investors like Qualcomm Ventures and Artiman. In a recent Series D funding round, the company raised ₹175 crore (about $20.4 million), boosting its valuation to ₹1,500 crore. This is a big jump from its previous value of ₹400 crore back in 2017.

Founded in 2012 by Arvind Lakshmikumar, Ankit Kumar, and Cecilia D’Souza, Tonbo focuses on biomimetic imaging solutions—technology inspired by nature. Their products, like AI-driven seekers, thermal weapon sights, and coastal surveillance systems, are designed to enhance strategies in modern warfare. This innovative equipment is supplied to the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Indian Air Force, among others. Their reach extends from India to the US, Greece, and Poland, marking them as a crucial player in defence tech.

India’s defence sector is rapidly expanding. Recent data shows that defence production has surged to ₹1.27 lakh crore in FY24, marking a remarkable 174% increase from FY15. Startups like Tonbo, along with others such as Garuda Aerospace and ideaForge, are harnessing cutting-edge technologies like AI and unmanned systems to meet the growing demand for innovative defence solutions. Government initiatives, like Karnataka’s partnership with DRDO, are also paving the way for startups by providing access to essential testing facilities. Moreover, funding options like Ajay Kumar’s ₹250 crore MountTech Growth Fund are helping early-stage ventures thrive in this competitive field.

With its new funding, Tonbo Imaging has ambitious plans. The company aims to ramp up its research in autonomous battlefield systems while expanding its global presence. They want to elevate India’s status as a leader in defence exports by offering state-of-the-art solutions for high-stakes situations.
