Top Spots to Find Delicious Kid-Friendly Meals During School Breaks

As summer break starts, many families face the challenge of feeding their children. Food insecurity is a growing concern in our area, but various organizations are stepping in to help.

Golden Harvest Food Bank is one such organization providing meals through its Summer Harvest Feeding and Summer Sprouts Programs. These initiatives aim to ensure that children have access to healthy food during the break.

Aiken County Public Schools are also playing a crucial role. From June 2 to June 26, kids can get free meals at local elementary and high schools. Breakfast is available from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m., and lunch from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. However, elementary schools will stop serving meals on June 19.

Here are some participating locations:

  • Busbee Elementary
  • Aiken High
  • Midland Valley High, among others.

Parents can join their children for meals for a small fee.

Aiken County Parks and Recreation has partnered with the Serenity Charity Club to provide meals from June 2 to July 18.

Richmond County Schools are also offering free meals for kids under 18. Locations include:

  • Richmond Hill Middle School: June 23-27
  • George Butler High School: June 2-27
  • Lucy Laney Comprehensive High School: June 2-27

Check directly with each school for specific details about meal availability and requirements.

In Edgefield County, free meals for kids under 18 are available on Thursdays from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. at several schools through early June.

According to a recent USDA report, nearly 13 million children in the U.S. live in "food-insecure" households, highlighting the importance of these programs. They not only provide nourishment but also foster community support during the summer months when families often struggle.

Feeding kids during the summer is vital, and these programs play an essential role in ensuring that no child goes hungry.
