Toyota Unveils Exciting New Name and Enhanced Technology for Its Exclusive U.S. Electric Vehicle

Toyota recently unveiled a revamped version of its all-electric vehicle, now simply called the “bZ.” This change from the previous name, “bZ4X,” aims to make things clearer for customers. It also helps the company move past the less-than-stellar reception of the last model.

The original bZ4X faced serious issues. Critics, including experts from Motor Trend, described it as a compliance vehicle, and it was recalled shortly after launch due to safety concerns. Such headlines were a blow to Toyota’s image as a reliable automaker.

To address these past mistakes, the 2026 bZ brings impressive upgrades. It now boasts a 25% increase in driving range, reaching up to 314 miles on a single charge. Horsepower has also improved significantly—up to 338 hp for all-wheel-drive versions and 221 hp for front-wheel drives. These enhancements help the bZ better compete with top players like Tesla’s Model Y and GM’s Chevrolet Equinox.

One notable feature is the inclusion of Tesla’s North American Charging System port. This gives drivers access to thousands of fast-charging stations across the country. Under ideal conditions, drivers can charge from 10% to 80% in around 30 minutes, making it a more practical choice for everyday use.

Moreover, the bZ features updated styling, making it visually appealing in a market that’s rapidly expanding. According to Cox Automotive’s Kelley Blue Book, U.S. EV sales rose 11.4% year-over-year in the first quarter of this year, with nearly 300,000 units sold. Even with this growth, though, adoption has been slower than anticipated.

Since its launch in late 2022, Toyota has sold about 35,000 bZ4X units, with 18,570 sold in 2024 alone. As it rolls out the new bZ model, it hopes to capture a larger share of the electric vehicle market.

With mounting competition and customer expectations, this new iteration may help Toyota regain its footing in the EV landscape.
