Tragic Chain Reaction Crash: University of Delaware Student Identified as Victim in U-Haul Incident

A tragic event unfolded in Newark, Delaware, where a University of Delaware graduate student, Marina Vasconcelos, lost her life. The incident occurred when Gordon Turner, 22, was driving a stolen U-Haul truck while fleeing from police on April 29, 2025. Along with the fatality, seven others were injured in the crash.

Authorities reported that Turner was arrested after hitting several vehicles and two pedestrians. Marina, 24, was pronounced dead at the scene. She was pursuing a PhD in chemistry and was remembered by friends as vibrant and passionate. “She loved dogs,” shared a friend, highlighting the loss felt by the community.

The crash began around 3:50 PM when police discovered the unoccupied U-Haul, which had not been returned on its due date. After its driver returned to the scene, he fled, leading to a chaotic series of collisions on East Main Street. Turner crashed into multiple parked cars and pedestrians, causing a chain reaction that injured others.

Turner was taken into custody after being evaluated at a hospital. He faces serious charges, including murder and reckless endangerment. Records indicate he had been wanted for previous charges, including illegal possession of a firearm. This troubling pattern – drivers fleeing police – has raised significant concern. Newark’s Mayor Travis McDermott noted that such incidents are becoming alarmingly common in the state.

It could have been anyone,” said University of Delaware student Anabel Dease.
