On Wednesday, a tragic chemical leak at the Catalyst Refiners plant in Institute, West Virginia, took the lives of two people and sent around 30 others to hospitals. Among the injured were seven ambulance workers who bravely responded to the scene. One worker remains in serious condition.
Emergency Management Director C.W. Sigman reported that a violent reaction occurred between nitric acid and another substance during a cleaning process. This produced toxic hydrogen sulfide, a dangerous chemical. Sigman noted that starting or ending a chemical reaction can be particularly hazardous.
Residents nearby were impacted by the leak, causing a temporary shelter-in-place order. Officials later confirmed that all fatalities occurred at the plant.
In the aftermath, multiple hospitals reported treating respiratory symptoms in patients, including coughing and shortness of breath. Some individuals even arrived by personal or unconventional vehicles like garbage trucks to seek medical help.
