The owner and three employees of a Michigan medical center face serious charges following the tragic death of a 5-year-old boy, Thomas Cooper, who died in an explosion in a hyperbaric chamber. The incident occurred on January 31 at the Oxford Center in Troy, where Thomas was receiving treatment for ADHD and sleep apnea.
Reports indicate that a fire broke out within the chamber, leading to its explosion. Sadly, Thomas was found dead, and his mother, who was nearby, suffered injuries. On Tuesday, Attorney General Dana Nessel announced that Tamela Peterson, the center’s owner, along with Jeffrey Mosteller, the safety manager, and Gary Marken, a management assistant, have been charged with second-degree murder and involuntary manslaughter. Aleta Moffitt, the operator of the chamber, faces similar charges, along with accusations of falsifying medical records.
During a news conference, Nessel highlighted findings from the Troy Police Department’s investigation. She pointed out that the Oxford Center prioritized profits over safety when using the hyperbaric chamber. “They offered treatments that were not supported by medical science, primarily because it generated revenue,” Nessel said.
This case raises critical questions about patient safety and the standards of care in medical facilities. It also serves as a reminder of the importance of regulations and accountability in healthcare settings, especially when it comes to vulnerable populations like children.
