Nepal’s Prime Minister, KP Sharma Oli, announced that his government sent two officers to support Nepali students following the tragic death of a young woman at an Indian university. This incident has led to significant protests.
The student, Prakriti Lamsal, was discovered unresponsive in her dorm room at the Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) in Bhubaneswar on Sunday evening. Her death sparked immediate outrage among fellow students, who demanded a thorough investigation. They claimed university management responded with suppression, according to the Nepal Students’ Union.
After the protests, the university initially instructed Nepali students to leave the campus by February 17. However, this directive was revoked just a day later. Reports indicated that students were asked to board buses headed for various railway stations to return home.
In an attempt to quell the unrest, the university later reached out to Nepali students via social media, urging them to return and continue their classes. They claimed to have taken steps to restore order.
As for the circumstances surrounding Prakriti’s death, initial police investigations suggest it may have been a suicide. A fellow student has been detained on charges related to abetment. According to police official Pinak Mishra, they are conducting a “scientific investigation” to uncover the facts of the case.
The Nepal Students’ Union has criticized the university for its negligence, stating that officials did not take proper action despite Prakriti reportedly raising concerns about harassment from another student.
