Tragic Drone Strike in El-Fasher: Dozens Killed in Besieged Sudan City

Dozens lost their lives in a recent drone strike at a shelter for displaced people in el-Fasher, a city in Sudan facing severe crisis. Activists reported that the paramilitary group known as the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) targeted the Dar al-Arqam camp, which is located on a university campus. They allegedly launched two drone strikes and eight artillery shells. The RSF has denied involvement in the attack.

According to the Sudan Doctors Network, at least 57 people were confirmed dead, including 17 children, and many more were injured. Eyewitnesses recounted chaotic scenes as rescuers worked to pull victims from the wreckage. Hospitals, already struggling due to the ongoing siege, are overwhelmed, forcing doctors to treat patients on floors and in hallways.

For 17 months, the RSF has surrounded el-Fasher, aiming to seize control of the last stronghold of the Sudanese army in the Darfur region. Activists say the situation has escalated into something beyond disaster.

Sudan has been engulfed in conflict since 2023, triggered by a power struggle between commanders of the RSF and the Sudanese army. Experts believe that if el-Fasher falls, the RSF could dominate the entire Darfur region. This move could signal their intention to establish an alternative government.

Recent research indicates that the RSF has constructed an earthen wall around el-Fasher, tightening their grip and making it even harder for civilians to escape. The United Nations reports that around 250,000 civilians are trapped in the city, warning that ongoing attacks on civilian areas could amount to war crimes.

In addition to the violent attacks, hunger and disease are rampant. With continuous bombardment and dwindling supplies, residents face insurmountable challenges. Just two days ago, another 13 people were killed when the RSF shelled one of the few remaining hospitals in the city.

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, condemned the relentless assaults on civilians, stating, “I am appalled by the RSF’s endless and wanton disregard for civilian life.” The conflict has claimed over 150,000 lives nationwide, displacing about 12 million people.

As the situation worsens, it’s crucial for the international community to take notice and respond to the humanitarian need. The light that shone on Sudan is fading. Without urgent action, the people of el-Fasher and beyond may endure even more suffering.
