Tragic Drownings: Two Carnival Cruise Passengers Lose Lives at Bahamas Resort

Two American tourists tragically drowned recently at Carnival Cruise Line’s new resort in the Bahamas. Both incidents happened at Celebration Key, a private area on Grand Bahama Island exclusive to Carnival passengers.

On Friday, the Royal Bahamas Police Force reported the first drowning around noon. A 79-year-old man was snorkeling when he lost consciousness and was discovered unresponsive on a commercial ship. Lifeguards performed CPR, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Later that afternoon, a 74-year-old woman also lost consciousness while swimming in a pool. She was similarly rescued and received CPR, but she too sadly passed away. The names of the victims haven’t been disclosed, but they were traveling with family.

Carnival Cruise Line released a statement expressing their condolences. The spokesperson said, “Our lifeguards and medical team responded to two separate emergency incidents at Celebration Key. Sadly, both guests have passed away. Our thoughts and prayers are with the guests and their families.”

Autopsies are pending to determine the specific causes of these deaths, as investigations continue.

Celebration Key, which opened in July, cost $600 million to build and includes various amenities like restaurants, pools, and entertainment options. The resort can accommodate two of Carnival’s largest ships simultaneously, allowing passengers to enjoy exclusive access.

Swimming safety remains a crucial topic in vacation destinations. According to the World Health Organization, around 236,000 people drown each year worldwide. Drownings often occur in unguarded swimming areas, highlighting the importance of safety measures like lifeguards and clear signage about potential risks.
