A tragic incident unfolded in York County, Pennsylvania, where police officer Andrew Duarte was fatally shot while responding to a shooting at UPMC Memorial hospital. This distressing event occurred when a man took hospital staff hostage, and the police later killed the suspect, identified as Diogenes Archangel-Ortiz.
Officer Duarte was a member of the West Borough Police Department. When he arrived at the hospital after the emergency call, he was tragically struck by gunfire from the suspect. Despite the chaos, two other officers also sustained injuries but are currently in stable condition.
Three members of the hospital staff—a doctor, a nurse, and a custodian—suffered injuries in this incident, but they are also reported to be stable. Another staff member was hurt in a fall during the incident. Thankfully, no patients were harmed.
Tim Barker, the York County district attorney, shared details at a news conference later that day. He revealed that Archangel-Ortiz targeted the hospital’s intensive care unit, although his motives remain unclear.
The local community is heartbroken over this tragedy and is mourning the loss of Officer Duarte, who is remembered as a dedicated friend and protector.
