Tragic Hot-Air Balloon Fire in Brazil: 8 Lives Lost and 13 Injured – What Happened?

On Saturday, tragedy struck in Praia Grande, Brazil, when a hot-air balloon caught fire mid-flight, resulting in the deaths of eight people. Footage from the scene showed the balloon engulfed in flames as it plummeted toward the ground.

Witnesses captured heart-wrenching images, including two people seen falling from the balloon before it crashed. Ulisses Gabriel, the head of Santa Catarina’s civil police, shared that three of the victims died holding each other. “It hurts the soul,” he said.

Thirteen others survived and were rushed to nearby hospitals. There were 21 people on board, including the pilot. Brazilian Governor Jorginho Mello expressed his sorrow, describing the incident as a tragedy. He promised state resources would be deployed to support rescue efforts and comfort grieving families.

The balloon’s pilot, one of the survivors, explained that a fire started in the basket. As the flames spread, he attempted to lower the balloon and instructed passengers to jump out. Unfortunately, not everyone could escape in time, leading to the devastating outcome.

Reports indicated the balloon was supposed to fly for about 45 minutes, climbing to 1,000 meters. Passengers paid around 550 reais (about $100) for the experience. Hot-air ballooning is particularly popular in southern Brazil during June festivities, celebrating local Catholic saints.

This incident follows another balloon crash last week in São Paulo state, where a 27-year-old woman lost her life and 11 others were injured. Such accidents raise concerns about safety in adventure tourism, prompting calls for stricter regulations to protect thrill-seekers.
