Tragic Jet Ski Accident at Grapevine Lake Claims Life of 18-Year-Old, Leaving Friends and Family Devastated

On Sunday, 18-year-old Ava Moore tragically lost her life while kayaking at Grapevine Lake. She was hit by a jet ski operated by two women. Witnesses reported that the driver fled the scene, jumping into a vehicle with a man. Two days later, police arrested the suspects, including the driver, Daikerlyn Alejandra Gonzalez Gonzalez, who has been identified as an undocumented immigrant.

Moore’s family is heartbroken. They described the immense pain of losing her, stating that their family will never be the same. Just days before her death, Ava graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy Preparatory School and was set to join the Academy’s Class of 2029.

Her basketball coach, Ke’Sha Blanton, expressed profound sorrow, saying, "There’s a lot of sadness, hurt, and pain. None of us saw it coming." The confusion turned to anger over the driver’s decision to leave without checking on Ava’s condition.

Moore was known for her strong spirit and dedication. Lt. Gen. Tony Bauernfeind, the U.S. Air Force Academy Superintendent, shared that her leadership and positive attitude impacted everyone around her. "We lost an exemplary teammate," he said, emphasizing the support the Academy is providing to her family and friends.

Friends and teammates described her as a natural leader who was passionate about serving her country. Eva Love, a teammate, remarked, “She truly cared about not only her teammates but her whole country. It’s hard knowing she’s gone.”

This tragedy highlights the dangers of recreational water activities, which have been a growing topic of discussion. According to the U.S. Coast Guard, there were 3,191 boating accidents in 2021, resulting in 658 fatalities. Safety regulations and awareness campaigns are crucial in preventing incidents like this.
