Tragic Loss: California State Fullerton Soccer Star Lauren Turner, 19, Dies Following E-Scooter Accident with Truck

A beloved soccer player from Cal State Fullerton passed away after a tragic accident. Lauren Turner, just 19, died on November 7, weeks after being critically injured when she and her teammate were hit by a box truck while riding electric scooters on September 27.

In a heartfelt message, Turner’s family shared their grief on GoFundMe. They described her as a vibrant spirit, saying, “Her laughter was a reflection of the joy God placed in her heart.” Known for her determination and encouragement, Turner left a lasting impact on her teammates and coaches.

Turner and her teammate Ashlyn Gwynn were on their way to a men’s soccer game when the accident occurred around 7 p.m. They were riding in the designated scooter lane on Associated Road when the truck struck them. Despite the chaos, the driver remained at the scene and cooperated with authorities. Investigators ruled out alcohol and drugs as factors.

Turner faced severe head injuries and was in the ICU for an extended period. She started in eight of the ten matches in her second season, already showcasing her talent early in her college career. Her team embraced her spirit, remembering her as “the funniest, most charismatic, and loving teammate.”

Gwynn also suffered serious injuries but has shown signs of recovery. Her family provided updates through their own GoFundMe, stating she had been moved to a less critical care unit.

In a show of solidarity, the Titan women’s soccer team wore custom bands with the initials and numbers of both players during the season. The community also held a candlelight vigil to honor Turner’s memory.

Incidents like these raise awareness about the safety of electric scooters, especially around busy streets. Research from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) shows that injuries related to electric scooters are on the rise, emphasizing the need for better safety measures and infrastructure for riders. As cities continue to adapt to the growing use of electric scooters, tragic events like this highlight the importance of strong traffic regulations and public awareness campaigns.

Turner’s legacy will undoubtedly live on, not just through her impressive athletic achievements but through the heartwarming memories shared by those who knew her. She will always be remembered as a light in her community.
