Alex Duong, a talented comedian and writer from Los Angeles, has passed away at 42. His journey took a tragic turn when he was diagnosed with a rare cancer called alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma last year. This aggressive form of cancer affected his soft tissues and led to significant health challenges, including surgery that aimed to restore his vision.
In a touching gesture, friends Hilarie and Gregg Steele set up a GoFundMe to assist Duong’s family during this overwhelming time. Unfortunately, he was hospitalized with septic shock and passed away at St. John’s Hospital in Santa Monica, California.
His family shared a heartfelt message, saying, “With heavy hearts, we announce that our dear Alex passed away peacefully this morning, surrounded by love and friends.” They expressed their gratitude for the support they’d received and highlighted his precious moments spent with his wife, Christina, and daughter, Everest.
Before his diagnosis, Duong’s career was on the rise. He was booked for performances in 41 states and had plans to collaborate with The Daily Show correspondent Ronny Chieng. His work spanned several notable TV shows, including Dexter, Everybody Hates Chris, and Blue Bloods.
Duong was a member of SAG-AFTRA since 2009 and held a position at the Comedy Store, where he shared his passion for comedy. He once remarked, “Comedians always have each other’s backs when times are tough. It’s beautiful to see that support in this world.” This sense of community was evident last August when fellow comedians held “The Alex Duong Has Cancer In His Eye Comedy Benefit Show,” raising awareness and funds to support him during his battle.
Additionally, recent statistics show that cancer remains a leading cause of death globally, with soft tissue sarcomas like Duong’s being particularly rare. According to the American Cancer Society, only about 1% of all cancers are soft tissue sarcomas, making stories like Duong’s even more poignant.
He is survived by his wife and daughter. Details for a celebration of his life are currently being arranged, as his loved ones and the comedy community reflect on his legacy.
