FANNIN COUNTY, GA – A tragic event unfolded at a campsite in northwest Georgia over the weekend. A man lost his life during a storm, and his funeral is set for this Thursday.

The incident took place at Panther Creek Falls, located in the beautiful Cohutta Wilderness. Around 2:12 a.m. on Saturday, the Fannin County Fire Department’s Search and Rescue team responded to a call about a life-threatening emergency. A massive tree had collapsed onto a campsite where four young men were resting in hammocks.
Nearby campers, a father and daughter, heard the noise and rushed over to help. They stayed with the injured group until emergency responders arrived. Sadly, one young man was pronounced dead at the scene. Another camper was airlifted to Blue Ridge Medical Center and is now expected to recover.
The victim was identified as Malachi Crain, a senior at the University of Alabama. Bama Catholic Campus Ministry honored him in a heartfelt Facebook post. Crain was pursuing a degree in Mathematics and Computer Science and was deeply involved in his campus community. He served as Vice President of Liturgy and led bible studies, impacting many lives during his time at university.
The campus ministry plans to hold a prayer service at St. Francis University Parish in Tuscaloosa to honor Crain’s memory and support his family. His visitation and funeral service will take place at Our Lady of Rosary Catholic Church in Gnatt, South Carolina, at 1 p.m. on Thursday.
This tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictable nature of storms and the potential dangers associated with outdoor activities. According to a recent report from the National Weather Service, severe weather incidents, like falling trees, have increased in frequency over the past decade, with storm-related fatalities rising by 20% in several regions across the United States.
