SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic — A tragic incident at a nightclub in Santo Domingo has led to significant loss, including the former Major League Baseball player Octavio Dotel. The 51-year-old was at the Jet Set nightclub attending a merengue concert when the roof collapsed, claiming at least 79 lives and injuring around 160 others.
Initially, it was reported that Dotel had been rescued and taken to the hospital. However, later confirmation from the Dominican Republic’s Professional Baseball League announced his death. Alongside him, Tony Blanco, a former MLB player and Nelsy Cruz, the governor of Monte Cristi and sister of former MLB player Nelson Cruz, also lost their lives in the disaster.
In response to the tragedy, MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred expressed deep sorrow, highlighting the profound connection between baseball and the Dominican Republic.
