One person lost their life, and over 30 were injured in an explosion and fire at a Staten Island shipyard on May 22, 2026. Most of the injured were members of the New York City Fire Department.
The fire began around 3:30 p.m., in a basement of a structure at the shipping dock in the Mariners Harbor area. According to FDNY Commissioner Lillian Bonsignore, the situation quickly escalated.
The deceased was a civilian. Another civilian suffered injuries, along with at least 34 firefighters. Among them were a fire marshal in critical condition and another firefighter who was seriously hurt.
FDNY Chief of Department John Esposito shared that while rescuers were searching for trapped workers, an explosion occurred, severely injuring multiple firefighters. All victims were transported to local hospitals.
What Happened?
First responders faced challenges such as heavy smoke and limited visibility. They were informed that two workers were trapped in the basement, making the situation more dangerous. “Confined spaces can be deadly for rescue efforts,” Esposito pointed out.
The fire quickly escalated to two alarms, and the explosion happened shortly after firefighters arrived. The mayor of New York City, Zohran Mamdani, praised the bravery of the first responders, who rushed toward danger to help others escape.
Residents in the area reported hearing the explosion. “I jumped when I heard it,” one resident recalled. Fortunately, first responders successfully controlled the fire around 7:20 p.m., deploying over 200 personnel to the scene.
The investigation into the cause of the fire and explosion is ongoing.
Recovery Efforts
The fire marshal suffered head trauma, including a small fracture and a brain bleed, and remains intubated in the hospital. Another firefighter is recovering well, though he was hospitalized with serious injuries. A doctor from Staten Island University Hospital explained, “In a confined space, the energy from an explosion can deeply impact internal organs. Thankfully, these firefighters are not facing severe internal injuries.”
Staten Island Borough President Vito Fossella urged the community to unite in support of the injured. “We must ensure this doesn’t happen again,” he stated, praising the professionalism of the fire department and emergency services.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul also shared her thoughts on social media, offering prayers for the injured and acknowledging the efforts of the first responders.
The identity of the deceased civilian has yet to be revealed, and a second civilian involved in the incident suffered serious injuries.
