Pokémon Legends: Z-A just released its Mega Dimension DLC, and with it comes some new features, especially new Research Requests. These mini-quests help you boost your Research Level, earning you valuable rewards like new moves for your Pokémon and items that speed up leveling.
Reaching Research Level 50 unlocks the coveted Shiny Charm, which increases the chances of finding alternate-colored Pokémon. Previously, getting the Charm was a tedious task, but Mega Dimension makes it easier. However, this ease comes with a price—the DLC costs $30.
To get the Shiny Charm, you need to complete 1,000 battles. It sounds tough, right? After spending about 60 hours in the game, I’ve done around 570 battles, and I wasn’t even focused on getting the Charm. Many players are feeling the grind, and it’s a significant time commitment.
Once you dive into the new story content, you’ll notice that new Research Requests make reaching Level 50 faster, which is a relief for new players. But if you’ve already put in the work, it can be frustrating to see how quickly others can catch up, all because of this paywall.
Community reactions are mixed; many players express anger online about having to pay to avoid a grind they previously faced. On Twitter, players are sharing their thoughts, with some pointing out the disparity in game progression.
Interestingly, the trend of paywalls isn’t new in gaming. Many popular titles now include features locked behind a pay model. For instance, Mega Stones for certain Pokémon also require a subscription to online ranked battles, adding to the controversy around accessibility.
Despite the challenges, Pokémon fans continue to engage with the content and share their experiences. If you want the Shiny Charm without the grind, be prepared to invest not just time but also money.
