Since then, he has personally replied to over 30,000 messages. These texts ranged from requests for additional self-study spaces to complaints about air conditioning. For instance, when a student worried about waking up early, Kong didn’t just offer advice; he started morning runs on campus to inspire others to join him.

Kong isn’t just reacting; he’s proactively engaging. When students struggled to enroll in certain courses, he worked with the academic office to quickly update the system. One humorous message about wanting “roasted chicken” led to the university treating all its students and staff to a crayfish feast during an anniversary celebration.

People doubted Kong’s motives at first. Was this just a publicity stunt? But at a recent graduation, he shared his personal journey, recalling how a supportive high school principal changed his life by organizing crucial revision classes when he was preparing for university entrance exams. He emphasized how meaningful actions in education can make a big difference.

His approach has reshaped the university’s governance, earning it the nickname “the warmest university.” Kong’s commitment to communication opened up feedback channels between students and university departments. Recognizing the need for formal structure, he launched a “President’s Express” platform in April 2023, integrated within the university’s WeChat system.

This platform allows students to report issues online and track their resolutions. Departments are required to respond quickly, fostering accountability. For instance, urgent matters need solutions within a day, while general issues are typically resolved within three days. If departments fall behind, automatic reminders go out to ensure no problem is overlooked.

Student reactions have shown the impact of this initiative. Liu Haitao, a graduate student, reported problems with library air conditioning through the platform and saw improvements within days. He expressed feeling valued during his time at the university.

The platform has already processed over 5,600 requests since its launch, averaging a resolution time of just 15.1 hours and boasting a remarkable 98% first-time resolution rate. With a satisfaction rate of 96%, it’s clear that students feel heard.

As the platform gains traction, the nature of Kong’s messages has shifted. Instead of complaints, he now receives thank-you notes and updates on job opportunities from grateful students. This transformation reflects a growing culture of support and responsiveness at the university.

In an age where student engagement is so crucial, Kong Jianyi’s efforts provide a fresh perspective on university governance, showing how open lines of communication can lead to a thriving campus community.
