Thomas Schäfer, a key figure at Volkswagen, shared some exciting news about the upcoming ID. Polo. He believes this model kicks off a new era for the brand, boasting a fresh look, user-friendly features, great quality, and impressive driving performance. With an entry price around 25,000 euros, it’s aiming to make electric cars more accessible for many in Europe. Plus, this is just the start—Volkswagen plans to introduce six more electric models by 2026, all carrying the Volkswagen name.

Reflecting on a milestone, the ID. Polo arrives 50 years after the original Polo debuted. Volkswagen is leaning into its strengths—simple operation, functionality, quality, and affordability. This model introduces a new design called ‘Pure Positive,’ crafted by Head of Design Andreas Mindt. The goal is to provide a compact electric car that offers more space and superior driving experiences, akin to larger vehicle classes.

When it launches in spring 2026, the ID. Polo will come in three power options: 85 kW (116 PS), 99 kW (135 PS), and 155 kW (211 PS). There’s even a sporty ID. Polo GTI version that will be available later, cranking out 166 kW (226 PS).

The entry-level versions will feature a 37 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery, designed for fast charging at 90 kW. The more powerful variants will utilize a different 52 kWh battery, allowing for a range of up to 450 km and faster charging at 130 kW DC.

Driving this innovation is a new front-wheel-drive system built on Volkswagen’s advanced Modular Electric Drive Matrix, called MEB+. The improved electric drive is lighter and simpler, which helps cut costs. It uses a new PowerCo unified cell technology that enhances energy density by about 10%, which means longer ranges with fewer components.

This exciting development aligns with a broader trend in the automotive industry. According to recent data, electric vehicle sales in Europe rose by 57% in 2021, with many consumers showing a growing preference for sustainable transport options. Experts believe that as more models like the ID. Polo hit the market, this trend will continue to accelerate.
