Nigeria is hosting an important dialogue to integrate climate change adaptation into state development plans. This initiative aims to strengthen climate resilience and encourage the participation of the private sector.
The event will take place in Abuja from May 5 to May 7. Co-hosted by the National Adaptation Plan (NAP) Global Network and Nigeria, it will gather government representatives from various African countries, including Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Chad, and South Sudan.
This gathering focuses on enhancing national responses to each country’s unique climate vulnerabilities. The goal is to identify effective adaptation measures that can reduce conflict and foster peace. Dr. Iniobong Abiola-Awe, from Nigeria’s Ministry of Environment, highlighted the need for conflict-sensitive national adaptation plans to achieve this.
Climate change is not just about the environment; it can escalate tensions in conflict-affected areas. Many of these regions face immediate needs like security and basic services, making it hard to prioritize climate actions. Yet, integrating adaptation efforts with peacebuilding strategies can turn these challenges into opportunities.
Recent studies show that effective NAP processes can help include peacebuilding objectives in adaptation efforts. Anne Hammil from the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) emphasized the importance of leveraging the NAP process to break the cycle of climate change and conflict in vulnerable states. This approach has engaged over 1,000 adaptation planners from 84 countries, fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange.
Nigeria’s National Adaptation Plan Framework is designed to tackle climate impacts in key sectors like agriculture, water, and health. It aims to meet medium- to long-term adaptation needs while aligning with national development goals.
By connecting climate adaptation and peacebuilding, Nigeria is setting a precedent that could inspire other nations facing similar challenges in a changing climate.
