The B.C. NDP government has announced funding for various projects across the province. In Vernon, the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA Vernon) is set to receive a significant boost of $250,000. This money will go toward renovating a new building that will become a vital public space for youth. It will offer them access to essential care, services, and resources.
Harwinder Sandhu, the MLA for Vernon-Lumby, emphasized the importance of this funding. He stated that it would not only improve resources for the youth in downtown Vernon but also create local jobs. This new space aims to be a safe haven for young people seeking support.
In addition, the Sovereign Lake Nordic Club will get $14,585 for repairs to its day lodge. These updates are crucial for maintaining the facility and ensuring it serves the community well.
Overall, a total of 54 capital projects across the province will receive funding, amounting to $5 million through the Community Gaming Grants program. This program helps non-profits acquire equipment or fund renovations. It also supports various areas, including the arts, sports, social services, public safety, and environmental initiatives.
The funding comes from provincial revenues generated by commercial gambling and is managed in cooperation with the BC Lottery Corporation. Each year, up to $140 million is distributed through this program, helping to strengthen communities across British Columbia.
