During spring break, students at Columbus State University (CSU) transformed a dull loading dock into a lively mural. This project was led by freshman art major Cora Pearl James from Albany, Georgia. She was chosen by CSU Libraries and the Department of Art to brighten the blank walls of the Simon Schwob Memorial Library.
Cora’s vision for the mural was simple yet powerful—a giant open book symbolizing “new life.” She wanted to bring vibrancy and creativity to the space, emphasizing that art can foster a sense of community.
“I was absolutely flabbergasted,” Cora said, reflecting on her surprise at being selected for the project just months into her college journey.
What started as a student-led effort quickly evolved into a campus-wide initiative. Dr. Bryan Banks, CSU’s interim dean of libraries, and other faculty members organized the project. They wanted students to take the lead and make their creativity shine.
“This mural ties into the university’s creative focus,” Dr. Banks explained. The collaboration with CSU’s art and library departments led to the largest project of its kind on campus. Art students contributed designs, but Cora’s proposal stood out for its strong connection to CSU’s identity.
Hannah London-Janicki, a senior communication major, documented the mural’s creation. She captured how the project’s growth came from collaboration. “It’s about how one student’s vision can create something bigger,” she noted. Initially, only a few students were painting, but many passersby joined in as the day progressed.
The mural reflects the spirit of CSU. It showcases student creativity and teamwork, transforming a neglected corner into a vibrant focal point of campus life. This project is a testament to how the university empowers students to bring their ideas to life and make a lasting impact on their community.
Recent surveys show that 83% of students believe creative projects enhance their learning experience. CSU’s approach to hands-on learning prepares students to apply their skills in real-world settings, making the mural an inspirational example of students leaving their mark on campus.
Columbus State University continues to support initiatives like this, ensuring that all students can gain valuable experiential learning opportunities during their studies. For more information on Columbus State’s arts programs, visit the Department of Art and CSU Libraries.
