For example, he pointed out that ordering a book online is simple, but it lacks the meaningful connections typically found in traditional markets. In the past, a farmer might borrow from a trader who knew him well. Today, companies like Amazon feel faceless, erasing those personal ties.

Hosabale expressed a broader concern, noting that in places like the United States, genuine community has nearly vanished. He believes that a society relying solely on market-driven governance cannot remain healthy. This critique echoes recent findings from sociological studies showing that loneliness and isolation are rising in many modern societies.

Moreover, he stressed the importance of respecting nature. “We depend on electricity, but we must find ways to generate it responsibly,” he stated. He believes education should focus not just on facts but on values that nurture a cohesive society. Hosabale also criticized the Western focus on individual rights, suggesting it often neglects the interconnectedness of community and nature.

As an alternative, he admired Bhutan’s Gross National Happiness model, which prioritizes human well-being over economic metrics. This approach aligns with recent discussions in sustainable development, suggesting that true progress should consider environmental and social factors together.
