India’s Bharat Electronics Limited has secured a contract to enhance the electronic warfare capabilities of the Indian Air Force’s Mi-17 V5 helicopters. This deal, worth 2.4 billion Indian rupees (about $275 million), covers both electronic warfare suites and aircraft modification kits. The systems will be developed by the Combat Aircraft Systems Development & Integration Centre and the Defence Research & Development Organisation.
The new electronic warfare suite will include advanced features like a radar warning receiver, a missile approach warning system, and a countermeasure dispensing system. With these upgrades, the helicopters will significantly improve their operational safety during missions.
What’s noteworthy is that most of the components for this project will be sourced locally. This initiative is expected to strengthen India’s defense manufacturing sector, creating jobs and promoting indigenous technologies.
A Closer Look at the Mi-17 V5
The Indian Air Force currently operates about 150 Mi-17 V5 helicopters, which were purchased from Russia between 2008 and 2013. These versatile helicopters are mainly used for missions in mountainous areas. They can fly up to speeds of 250 kilometers per hour and have a cruising speed of around 230 kilometers per hour. The Mi-17 V5 can reach altitudes of up to 6,000 meters and has a maximum flight range of 675 kilometers.
