Eastern Bank PLC recently held the 2nd EBL Climate Change Action Awards at the Radisson Blu in Dhaka. This event, partnered with the European Union and several embassies, celebrates innovative eco-friendly initiatives in Bangladesh.
Several organizations were recognized for their outstanding contributions to environmental sustainability in categories like Green Manufacturing and Climate Smart Agriculture.
Innovative Green Manufacturing
One standout winner is Siam City Cement (Bangladesh) for its product, INSEE ECO Plus+. Launched in 2024, this green cement is designed for the unique challenges of coastal Bangladesh, where salinity and corrosion can damage structures. By using industrial by-products like slag and fly ash, the cement lowers its carbon footprint by 46% compared to traditional types, making it a win for both the environment and builders.
Smart Battery Solutions
Cassetex also received accolades for tackling lead pollution from traditional batteries, which harms public health. Their new lithium-ion batteries are lighter and allow for faster battery swapping, keeping transport efficient. They plan to set up a recycling center to recover valuable materials, which could boost the economy and support clean energy initiatives.
Floating Farming Innovations
Youth Action for Sustainable Future (YASF) has introduced floating pond farming to combat flooding in Mehediganj. Traditional fishing methods often fail here due to harsh weather. The innovative floating platforms, made from bamboo and drums, keep fish nets secure and allow for vegetable farming on top. This affordable method improves food security and supports local farmers.
Empowering Communities Through Media
Somoy TV won an award for its project, Somoy Nature. This initiative bridges the gap between complex environmental issues and public understanding through data-driven, simple videos. With over 20 million viewers, it has reduced public panic during environmental emergencies. Experts commend the program for improving community resilience and informed policy-making.
Each of these winners shows that sustainable solutions can drive economic growth and community well-being. They highlight the role of innovation in creating a greener future for Bangladesh and beyond.
