Travis Smith Joins Raiders as New Defensive Line Coach: What This Means for the Team

Travis Smith Joins the Las Vegas Raiders as Defensive Line Coach

Travis Smith is the new defensive line coach for the Las Vegas Raiders, taking on a pivotal role as announced recently. Smith has an impressive background, including a stint as the defensive run game coordinator for the Tennessee Titans last season. His leadership played a key role in helping defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons reach his fourth Pro Bowl by leading NFL interior linemen in several categories, including solo tackles and sacks.

Before his time with the Titans, Smith spent three seasons as the defensive line coach for the Chicago Bears. Under his guidance, the Bears excelled in 2023, allowing the fewest rushing yards in the league while also improving their sack performance significantly. This success included defensive end Montez Sweat earning his first Pro Bowl selection.

Smith’s journey in football includes a decade with the Raiders, where he held various coaching positions. He mentored talented players like Maxx Crosby, who earned Pro Bowl honors after a standout season. Crosby’s performance was remarkable, with significant statistics that cemented his status as a rising star. In 2019, Smith helped develop rookie defensive ends, setting a record for the most combined sacks by rookie draft classes in the NFL that year.

Historically, Smith’s coaching prowess helped shape elite defensive talents. Khalil Mack, for example, blossomed under his leadership. Mack achieved numerous accolades, including being named to the Pro Bowl three times and earning the Defensive Player of the Year award. Mack’s memorable eight-game sack streak tied an NFL record, showcasing the impact of Smith’s coaching.

Before entering the NFL, Smith worked in college football. He coached at various levels, starting at Cal Poly and later at Santa Monica Junior College. His early experiences laid a strong foundation for his coaching career.

Smith hails from Walnut Creek, California. He played college football at Cal Poly State University, where he obtained a degree in kinesiology. He and his wife, Christina, are proud parents to their son Jackson and daughter Harper.

In the fast-paced world of the NFL, Smith’s return to the Raiders offers a promising future for the team’s defensive line. His proven track record of developing talent makes him a valuable asset as the Raiders aim for success in the coming seasons.
