In New Delhi, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri recently discussed the recent deportation of certain Indian individuals from the U.S. He explained that the U.S. government classified this operation as a national security move. This classification led to the use of a military aircraft instead of the usual commercial flights seen in past deportations.
Misri stated, “We’ve been clear with our U.S. counterparts about the use of a military plane. This latest deportation is different from past ones because it was designated a national security operation in the U.S.” He noted that this situation requires different handling compared to typical deportation cases.
Regarding the number of Indian citizens involved, Misri mentioned that approximately 487 individuals are presumed to have final removal orders. Of these, details for 298 people have been provided to Indian officials, and they are currently verifying this information. He emphasized, “We need to confirm their citizenship before giving precise numbers.” This is important to ensure accurate reporting and to understand the situation fully.
When asked about alternatives to deportation, Misri suggested that they are open to exploring feasible options. He acknowledged that many figures are circulating regarding the deportees but reinforced that confirmation can only follow once their Indian citizenship is established.
In a practical sense, “We will have a certain number of Indian citizens and aircraft available. The capacity of those aircraft will determine how many flights we will need,” he added, hinting at logistical considerations for the operation.
