President Donald Trump criticized Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Monday after Zelenskyy mentioned that peace might be “very, very far away” regarding Russia’s war in Ukraine. Trump’s comments reflect the growing pressure from his supporters for Zelenskyy to change his approach to the U.S. leadership.

The relationship between Trump and Zelenskyy has become strained, especially after a recent meeting at the White House where both Trump and Vice President JD Vance expressed frustration over Zelenskyy’s lack of appreciation for U.S. aid to Ukraine since the start of the conflict in February 2022.
Trump shared his discontent on his Truth Social platform, stating, “This is the worst statement that could have been made by Zelenskyy, and America will not put up with it for much longer!” His criticism stemmed from Zelenskyy’s assertion that reaching a settlement with Russia would take time. While Zelenskyy tried to emphasize a positive view of U.S.-Ukraine relations, Trump found his comments unsatisfactory.
Zelenskyy noted that the relationship with the U.S. is crucial and ongoing, yet Trump was annoyed that Zelenskyy implied that peace would not come swiftly. Trump argued that Zelenskyy’s statements show he is not eager for peace as long as he has U.S. support. He expressed skepticism about the European allies’ ability to manage the situation without American backing, calling into question their strength against Russia.
Amid this tension, Trump’s national security adviser raised concerns about Zelenskyy’s willingness to negotiate peace. Mike Waltz questioned if Zelenskyy was prepared to make necessary compromises for an end to the fighting.
Further complicating matters, House Speaker Mike Johnson remarked that Zelenskyy needs to demonstrate gratitude and be more cooperative, or risk losing U.S. support. Senator Lindsey Graham, although a supporter of Ukraine, echoed similar sentiments, suggesting that Zelenskyy should either resign or adapt his approach for further negotiations.
