United States President Donald Trump has taken steps to boost the coal industry by directing the Pentagon to purchase electricity from coal-fired plants. This executive order aims to support coal amid its struggle against cheaper energy sources and climate change issues.
In his announcement, Trump emphasized the importance of coal workers, referring to them as vital for America’s economy. He declared, “You heat our homes, fuel our factories, and turn natural resources into American riches and dreams,” while addressing coal executives.
Under the new order, the Department of Defense must establish long-term contracts with coal plants, prioritizing coal-based energy assets. However, specific details on the amount of energy to be purchased or the financial terms remain unclear.
In addition, Trump announced a $175 million investment by the Department of Energy aimed at upgrading six coal plants across North Carolina, Ohio, West Virginia, Kentucky, and Virginia. He has been vocal about supporting “beautiful, clean coal,” asserting it is key to reviving domestic manufacturing and achieving US leadership in technology.
Despite these efforts, coal production in the US has plummeted by over half since 2008. In 2023, the country produced 578 million tonnes of coal, making up only 16% of the energy market, compared to 43% from natural gas and 21% from renewables. A recent study by Energy Innovation revealed that 99% of coal facilities are now more costly to operate than switching to renewable energy sources.
Trump’s push for coal comes at a controversial time. The scientific community widely agrees that fossil fuels, including coal, significantly contribute to climate change. Public sentiment about coal is shifting too, especially among younger generations who prioritize environmental sustainability. Social media discussions reflect these differing views, with many advocating for greener energy sources.
As the energy landscape evolves, the question remains whether Trump’s coal revival efforts can keep pace with the growing popularity and efficiency of renewable options.
