Trump Revokes Security Clearances for Perkins Coie Lawyers: What This Means for Legal Accountability

On Thursday, President Trump announced plans to suspend the security clearances of lawyers at Perkins Coie, a law firm known for its connection to opposition research during the 2016 presidential campaign regarding Trump’s alleged ties to Russia.

This action is part of a broader strategy by Trump and his administration to target various individuals and organizations they view as adversaries, including prosecutors and intelligence officials. Trump stated, “This is an absolute honor to sign. What they’ve done is just terrible. It’s weaponization against a political opponent, and it should never be allowed to happen again,” as he prepared to sign the executive order.

The executive order instructs key government officials to review the security clearances at Perkins Coie. It does not specify how many lawyers are affected but aims to ensure that their clearance status serves the national interest. Additionally, it restricts attorneys from accessing government buildings if such access poses a national security risk and directs officials to examine any contracts with the firm.

A spokesperson for Perkins Coie responded, stating that the executive order is “patently unlawful” and indicated plans to challenge it in court.

The firm has faced scrutiny due to its engagement with Fusion GPS, which conducted research on Trump’s connections to Russia as part of its work for Hillary Clinton’s campaign. This led to the controversial Steele dossier, which claimed Russia had compromising information on Trump. While the dossier stirred controversy, subsequent investigations found many of its claims to be unverified, leaving the overall integrity of the research in question.

The existence of the dossier became known publicly in January 2017 when former FBI Director James Comey briefed Trump on it. The revelation that the Clinton campaign funded the research further fueled debates about its credibility, with Trump frequently dismissing it as false.

While the investigation into Trump’s campaign did not find evidence of criminal conspiracy, it confirmed that Russia made extensive efforts to influence the election in Trump’s favor. Furthermore, the investigation was initiated based on a tip unrelated to the dossier, indicating a much broader context of concern about Russian interference.

The Trump administration has also been active in removing individuals from the Justice Department involved in investigations against him. It aims to strip security clearances from lawyers associated with these investigations and has previously targeted intelligence officials who voiced concerns about the Hunter Biden laptop controversy.

Additionally, the executive order highlights the Trump administration’s criticism of Perkins Coie’s diversity, equity, and inclusion practices, reflecting their broader agenda to challenge such efforts in both the private sector and federal educational institutions.
