The Trump administration is moving quickly to reduce the number of federal employees. Recently, there has been a wave of confusion among workers following a message from Elon Musk, asking staff to justify their roles or face dismissal.
Since Sunday, several agencies have announced staff cuts as part of a “reduction in force” initiated by President Trump. According to anonymous sources, at least three agencies informed employees about upcoming layoffs. This initiative is part of a broader effort, supported by Musk, to significantly decrease the federal workforce.
The initial phase of these cuts includes 144 job losses at the Department of Housing and Urban Development, affecting offices nationwide. The General Services Administration plans to cut 30 to 40 positions, with notifications expected by the end of the week. Additionally, the U.S. Agency for International Development is set to cut around 2,000 staff members based in the United States.
In a letter to affected employees, USAID’s acting director, Peter Marocco, stated, “I regret to inform you that you are affected by a reduction in force (RIF). This RIF action does not reflect directly on your service, performance or conduct.” He elaborated that this restructuring aims to align with the agency’s new priorities and foreign policy goals.
The impact of these cuts is significant, as many employees face uncertainty about their jobs. These changes are part of a trend toward restructuring federal agencies, which can lead to an entirely different approach to government operations.
