Turning Trash into Treasure: How India’s ₹800 Crore Waste Management Success Could Fund 7 Vande Bharat Trains!

Last month, the Indian government collected about Rs 800 crore from selling scrap during a cleanliness drive. To put that into perspective, this amount is similar to what it would take to fund seven Vande Bharat trains. Remarkably, this revenue also topped the budget for the Chandrayaan-3 lunar mission, which was Rs 615 crore.

Since the Swachhata initiative kicked off in 2021, earnings from scrap sales have reached around Rs 4,100 crore. The latest campaign, which ran from October 2 to 31, managed to clear an impressive 232 lakh square feet of office space. In total, they sorted through 29 lakh physical files during this drive. The effort spanned about 11.58 lakh government office sites across India.

The drive was led by Union ministers Mansukh Mandaviya, K. Ram Mohan Naidu, and Jitendra Singh. Sharing updates on social media, Singh highlighted that over five years, the campaign has generated Rs 4,085 crore and cleared 24 lakh square feet of unused space, equating to the disposal of scrap furniture and outdated equipment for better use.

The response on social media has been overwhelmingly positive, with many users expressing their amazement at the results. This annual initiative not only cleans up clutter but also highlights the importance of recycling and waste management in government spaces.
