On August 4, Catherine Lindqvist, the executive director of the U.Va. Executive Search Group, informed the Board of Visitors that they’re hiring an external search firm to help find the University’s next president. This process could take four to six months.
University spokesperson Bethanie Glover added that the firm will help the Board and the Special Committee on the Nomination of a President by identifying candidates from around the country. This search will also take into account community feedback gathered from listening sessions.
Hiring external search firms is common for universities. These firms have extensive networks, experience, and can ensure a diverse pool of candidates. They are also skilled at maintaining confidentiality during the search process.
The University has hired external firms in the past for presidential searches. Notably, both former presidents, Teresa Sullivan and Jim Ryan, had their selections facilitated by such firms. After former President John T. Casteen III retired in 2009, the University used R. William Funk & Associates to find Sullivan.
Interestingly, Funk & Associates has indicated it is ready to assist with the current search, committing to confidentiality and a two-year guarantee for the search if needed. Generally, executive search firms charge about one-third of the hired president’s salary as a retainer—in this case, likely over $350,000 based on Jim Ryan’s salary of $1.1 million.
In a previous search, the University worked with Isaacson, Miller in 2017 to select Ryan. They also used a similar fee structure, demonstrating a consistent approach in hiring practices.
The search process generally includes several stages. Initially, the selected firm meets with stakeholders to outline goals and candidate profiles. The search committee then engages once the firm presents a public job description and starts screening candidates. Only after preliminary interviews do the search committee members delve deeper into evaluating candidates.
According to the University’s records, they currently have agreements with over 20 executive search firms to choose from for this search. Alongside this recruitment effort, a special committee made up of students, faculty, and alumni will gather feedback to recommend finalists to the Board.
Interim President Paul G. Mahoney, appointed in August, will lead the University until a permanent president is chosen.

The goal is to identify a candidate who not only meets the qualifications but also fits the broader vision and mission of the University community.
