The complaint mentions that many restaurants feel pressured by DoorDash’s dominance. Some restaurant owners have described feeling as if they have a “gun to their head,” fearing that they have no choice but to accept DoorDash’s terms. Uber believes this kind of power makes it hard for restaurants to find the best delivery options for their businesses.
Uber is seeking not just monetary damages but also wants DoorDash to modify its practices, which they say have cost Uber substantial revenue. In response, DoorDash’s representatives dismissed Uber’s claims, calling them baseless and a result of Uber’s inability to compete effectively in the market.
According to recent statistics, DoorDash controls over 62% of the U.S. delivery market, with Uber Eats at about 25%. A recent study by Intouch Insight also found that DoorDash is leading in customer satisfaction, offering better promotions and faster delivery times compared to Uber Eats and Grubhub.
The study indicated that DoorDash’s average delivery time was just over 26 minutes, while Uber Eats took about 38 minutes. This efficiency, coupled with strong customer engagement, might explain DoorDash’s growing popularity.
Despite the high demand for delivery services, concerns about the fees charged by these apps persist. Many customers face inflated prices—sometimes double the menu cost—when ordering through delivery apps, and restaurant owners are increasingly vocal about how these fees affect their profits.
Uber has noted growing complaints from restaurants about how DoorDash’s behavior limits their options and penalizes them for exploring better alternatives. In light of these issues, Uber hopes their lawsuit will lead to fairer practices in the delivery industry, allowing restaurants to choose services that best fit their needs without fear of repercussions.
