London: Care Home Director Jailed for Illegal Hiring
A care home agency director in south-east England has been sentenced to two-and-a-half years in prison for employing undocumented immigrants from India. Benoy Thomas, 50, was found guilty at Lewes Crown Court in July and has now been disqualified from being a company director for eight years.
Thomas ran A Class Care Recruitment Ltd in Bexhill-on-Sea. Despite knowing that the workers he hired had no right to work in the UK, he continued to recruit them as care assistants. “He knowingly broke immigration laws, putting vulnerable people at risk,” said Katie Samways, a prosecutor with the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS). Many of these workers lacked necessary training and skills.
An investigation by Immigration Enforcement revealed that Thomas facilitated the illegal employment of at least 13 individuals between 2017 and 2018. The evidence against him included timesheets, invoices, and text messages, all showing he organized work for people he knew were in the country illegally.
