Ukraine Health Update: February 2025
February 2025 proved to be a challenging month for health care in Ukraine. Despite some diplomatic movements, violence and conflicts continued to limit access to essential health services, particularly in hard-hit areas. This ongoing situation highlights the urgent need for support and solutions.
A report from the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission (HRMMU) indicated an alarming rise in casualties this year. They confirmed at least 123 civilians were killed and 567 were injured in February alone, representing a 35% increase from the previous year. Health teams are working tirelessly, providing medical assistance to over 300 people needing urgent care.
Health facilities are constantly under threat. A notable incident occurred on February 19, when airstrikes damaged a major children’s hospital in Odesa. On the same day, an outpatient clinic in Kherson was hit, injuring eight staff members. So far in 2025, there have been 70 reported attacks on health care providers, resulting in the deaths of three health care workers.
Displacement is another significant concern. Heavy fighting, especially in the Donetsk region, forced approximately 2,800 people to flee their homes between February 1 and 15. Many of these individuals are in critical need of health care. Local health organizations have stepped in, providing necessary medical services and mental health support to nearly 1,800 people so far this year.
According to a recent Rapid Damage and Needs Assessment published in February by agencies including the World Bank and the EU, the health sector requires an estimated $860 million for recovery and reconstruction efforts in 2025.
Overall, it is clear that the ongoing conflict deeply impacts the health care system. The need for support and rapid responses remains urgent as health services strive to meet the growing demand in these difficult circumstances.
