Russia recently reported a significant attack using drones by Ukraine, claiming to intercept over 350 drones targeting various regions, including St. Petersburg. This barrage coincided with the start of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, an event often compared to Davos.
According to the governor of St. Petersburg, three districts in the city faced drone strikes that led to injuries and infrastructure damage. Additionally, strikes hit Smolensk, near the Belarus border, where critical facilities were targeted. Tragically, two firefighters lost their lives due to a fire caused by debris from a crashed drone.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that their strikes aimed at key locations, like the oil terminal in St. Petersburg—one of the largest in northwestern Russia—as well as military sites. Recent advancements in Ukraine’s medium and long-range drones have allowed them to strike targets far beyond the frontlines, indicating a shift in their military strategy. Zelensky noted that this approach is pivotal to moving towards peace.
Interestingly, these events unfolded just one day after Russia conducted a brutal attack on Ukraine, killing at least 23 people, including several in Kyiv. The United Nations has voiced strong condemnation of these attacks, which included over 600 drones and numerous missiles aimed at civilian infrastructure throughout Ukraine.
Airspace around St. Petersburg’s airport was restricted due to concerns about the drone attacks, causing delays to nearly two dozen flights. This escalation highlights the ongoing tensions in the region, with significant implications for both sides as they grapple with the consequences of these strikes.
