Ukraine’s Struggle for Key Territory: Trump Asserts ‘Peace Is in Russia’s Hands’ | CNN Insights

Russian forces recently took back Sudzha, a town in the Kursk region, which was one of the last places in this area held by Ukraine. This move puts pressure on Kyiv as it looks for ways to negotiate an end to the ongoing conflict.

According to the Russian defense ministry, their military group has also reclaimed other towns nearby. The Institute for the Study of War (ISW), a U.S.-based conflict monitor, confirmed the reports, saying that footage supports the claim that Russian troops have made significant gains in the region.

Sudzha might be small, with a pre-war population of around 5,000, but its recapture is symbolically important for Russia. It marks a shift in control, as it limits Ukraine’s bargaining power in the ongoing negotiations.

On the diplomatic front, U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff was reported to have arrived in Moscow recently. There are discussions about a potential 30-day ceasefire, which Ukraine appears willing to accept. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov expressed optimism about reclaiming all areas in Kursk currently under Ukrainian control.

President Vladimir Putin visited the Kursk region to boost troop morale and emphasized the need to "completely liberate" the area. He suggested the creation of a buffer zone to protect Russia from Ukrainian forces.

This conflict traces back to Ukraine’s incursion into Kursk in August, a bold move that was the first of its kind since World War II. The aim was to take back territory in a strategic effort to divert Russian military resources.

Despite these efforts, Ukraine has recently been losing hold on captured areas. General Oleksandr Syrskyi noted the necessity of tactical retreats to save lives. Meanwhile, Russian airstrikes have caused devastation in Sudzha, impacting both Ukrainian forces and civilians.

President Volodymyr Zelensky highlighted the increasing pressure on Ukrainian troops, affirming his military’s commitment to protecting lives. On the Russian side, General Valery Gerasimov claimed that Russian forces had regained 86% of the territory once held by Ukraine.

As the situation unfolds, the focus remains on potential negotiations for peace. According to former President Donald Trump, the next steps depend heavily on Russia’s response to the ongoing diplomatic meetings.

This evolving conflict illustrates the complex dynamics at play, with frontline developments impacting international discussions. Keeping an eye on the outcomes of these negotiations could be crucial for understanding future movements in the region.
