Scarlett Johansson is one of the few big Hollywood stars without social media. Even as she promotes her upcoming film, Jurassic World: Rebirth, she has decided to stay away from platforms like Instagram.
In a recent interview with InStyle, Johansson shared that Universal Pictures, the studio behind the film, had asked her to join Instagram to help promote the movie ahead of its release on July 2. However, she politely declined the offer. “I get a lot of pressure to join social media,” she admitted. “But it just didn’t feel right for me.”
Johansson recognizes the potential benefits of social media for her business, especially for her skincare brand, The Outset, which does have an Instagram presence. She finds that approach fun and not overly invasive. However, she emphasizes that everything she shares is rooted in truth. “If I enjoyed social media, I might have joined. But I don’t think I need to for this film,” she said confidently.
Johansson isn’t alone in her views. Maya Hawke, another actress, discussed in an interview how social media has changed the entertainment landscape. She mentioned that the line between being an actor and a celebrity has blurred, with some producers even casting based on an actor’s follower count. “I don’t care about Instagram… but it’s frustrating when the number of followers can determine funding for a movie,” she explained.
In her own experience, Hawke has talked with directors about the pressures of social media when it comes to casting. Some have warned her that if she deletes her account, it might affect future roles and the overall success of projects.
In Jurassic World: Rebirth, Johansson stars alongside Mahershala Ali and Jonathan Bailey. The movie is set five years after Jurassic World Dominion. In it, Johansson plays Zora Bennett, a covert operations expert on a mission to secure genetic material from dinosaurs. Things take a turn when she becomes stranded with a civilian family on a hidden island, uncovering secrets that may change everything.
