Players Re-signing with Washington

Tight end Zach Ertz will stay with the Commanders for another season. He showed he can still be a key player alongside quarterback Jayden Daniels. Ertz was a top target last year, ranking second in receptions, yards, and touchdowns. He said he felt healthier than ever and had his best season since 2021.

It’s not just Ertz who’s sticking around. Team leader Bobby Wagner also signed a one-year contract. Wagner is a seasoned veteran, starting his career with the Seattle Seahawks in 2012. Over 14 years, he has played 202 games and made impressive stats: 1,836 total tackles and 35 sacks. Last season, he led the team in tackles with 132, marking his 13th consecutive season with over 100 tackles.

John Bates is reportedly re-signing with the Commanders on a multi-year deal. Drafted in 2021, Bates is one of the best blocking tight ends in the league. He has helped to create lanes for running back Brian Robinson and provided protection for Daniels. Over his career, Bates has made 61 catches for 592 yards and two touchdowns.

The kicker who secured a playoff win for Washington is also back. Chris Gonzalez stepped in last season, hitting five of seven field goals and all 19 extra points during the regular season. He was even better in the playoffs, hitting seven of eight attempts and booting the game-winner against the Buccaneers.

Punter Tress Way, the longest-tenured player on the team, is staying for another year. Signed in 2014, he holds several franchise records. Even though he punted the second-lowest number of times in his career last season, he still recorded the most total punt yardage in Commanders history.

Running back Chris Rodriguez Jr. has received an exclusive rights tender. As a sixth-round pick last year, he played in nine games and rushed for 173 yards. His standout game was against the Titans, where he gained 94 yards and scored a touchdown.

Commanders’ Trade Moves

The Commanders made a significant addition by trading for wide receiver Deebo Samuel from the San Francisco 49ers, as reported by ESPN. Although the details are not officially confirmed, the Commanders are sending a fifth-round pick in 2025 to the 49ers. Samuel has been a dynamic player, accumulating 5,935 total yards and 42 touchdowns over his career. His best season was in 2021, earning Pro Bowl honors with 1,770 yards and 14 touchdowns.

Players Joining Washington

The Commanders reinforced their defensive line by signing former Jets defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw. Kinlaw spent four seasons with the San Francisco 49ers before joining the Jets. In 2024, he had a career year with 40 tackles and 4.5 sacks. Overall, he has played in 58 games and made 110 tackles.
