President Donald Trump has delayed some tariffs on Canada and Mexico, but this hasn’t stopped Canada from pushing back.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced a 25% surcharge on electricity exports to three US states, starting soon. He warned that if the US increases tariffs, he might completely cut off electricity access.
“If the United States escalates, I will not hesitate to shut the electricity off completely,” Ford told reporters. He expressed sympathy for American citizens. “It’s not the American people who started this trade war. It’s one person who’s responsible. That’s President Trump.”
Ford highlighted that his surcharge would impact families and businesses in New York, Minnesota, and Michigan, potentially adding about $100 a month to their electricity bills.
This move may also backfire on Canada’s energy sector. Canada relies heavily on US exports, and a prolonged trade war could lead to economic struggles. As the saying goes, no one really wins in a trade war.
Ford has indicated that if US tariffs go up, he might increase the surcharge. Trump has mentioned he would impose new tariffs on dairy and lumber coming from Canada, offsetting what Canada charges on US goods. He also hinted that tariffs on Canada and Mexico could rise if they don’t address issues like fentanyl crossing the border.
Recently, Ford boldly stated he would cut power to the US “with a smile” if Trump continued his tariff policies.
Coming from a significant political background in Ontario, Ford has been active on US cable news, discussing his tough stance against Trump’s tariffs.
