A stunning underwater discovery has excited scientists. A team from the Monterey Bay Aquarium and Research Institute (MBARI) filmed a “seven-arm octopus” displaying rare behavior. Known scientifically as Haliphron atlanticus, the seven-arm octopus is intriguing for more than just its name. Normally, octopuses have eight arms, but male seven-arms shed one during mating. This arm, called the hectocotylus, helps to transfer sperm and is tucked away, making it look like the octopus has only seven appendages. The recent footage from MBARI shows the octopus in its natural setting, about 700 meters (2,300 feet) deep in Monterey Bay. These creatures can grow quite large, sometimes weighing up to 75 kilograms (165 pounds), but sightings are incredibly rare.

During mating, the male uses the hectocotylus to transfer sperm, losing the arm temporarily but not permanently. This odd reproductive method adds to the mystery surrounding this species. These octopuses are also skilled predators, mainly feeding on jellyfish and other soft marine animals. The MBARI footage showed one of them catching a crimson red helmet jelly (Periphylla periphylla), highlighting their hunting skills.

MBARI’s observations serve as a major advancement in deep-sea research. Their use of a high-tech 4K camera allowed for amazing detail during the dive, revealing the octopus’s behavior and environment.
