Colombia recently made headlines for its biggest cocaine bust in a decade. Authorities seized 14 tons of cocaine at a major Pacific port, displaying both their determination to combat drug trafficking and the ongoing tensions with the U.S. The U.S. government has criticized Colombia’s current approach to anti-drug efforts, claiming it’s falling short.
The Colombian Defense Ministry reported that a specialized canine team uncovered the substantial stash hidden among sacks that were mixed with plaster. This major operation prevented around 35 million doses of cocaine from hitting the streets, valued at over $388 million.
President Gustavo Petro, whose term ends soon, called the seizure a historic achievement. Significantly, the operation was conducted “without a single death,” highlighting an effort to reduce violence in anti-drug operations. Buenaventura, where the bust occurred, is known as a crucial launch point for drug shipments from Colombia.
Petro has criticized the former U.S. President Donald Trump’s harsh anti-drug policies. He argues that these measures often lead to civilian casualties and compromise international law. In a recent interview with CBS News, Petro emphasized that the focus should be on arresting drug lords rather than targeting low-level workers in the drug trade.
According to the Drug Enforcement Administration, about 90% of the cocaine that ends up in the U.S. is from Colombia. The country has been under scrutiny, particularly as it continually sets records for coca leaf cultivation. Estimates suggest that Colombia has around 625,000 acres dedicated to drug cultivation, producing over 2,600 tons of cocaine as of 2023.
Despite harsh remarks from the U.S., Petro insists his government has made substantial strides against drug trafficking, pointing to record seizures. On social media, he shared data showing a steady increase in drug seizures over the past six years.
The fight against drug trafficking remains critical for Colombia. Just this week, navy divers intercepted over 450 pounds of cocaine from a ship bound for Europe, following a previous bust of over 7 tons from two boats and a semi-submersible vessel.
As the situation evolves, experts believe that a unified strategy addressing both drug supply and public health issues is essential. Balancing enforcement with preventive measures could be key to slowing the cocaine trade and promoting stability in Colombia.
