Mindseye has had a rough start. Created by Build A Rocket Boy, a team led by former Grand Theft Auto producer Leslie Benzies, the game launched last year to terrible reviews. It quickly earned the title of the worst-reviewed game of the year according to Metacritic.
In an effort to turn things around, Build A Rocket Boy recently decided to change its strategy. On April 28, they announced they were cutting ties with their publisher, IOI, and would start self-publishing Mindseye. A major part of this shift is a permanent price drop from $60 to $35 across all platforms. The hope is that this lower price might attract players who shied away due to the game’s rocky launch.
Co-CEO Mark Gerhard stated, “Now is the perfect time to experience Mindseye, with over a year of enhancements and a more accessible price.” The studio is introducing new content, including a story DLC called Blacklisted, which features a new character and centers on espionage. They are also adding tools for players to create their own missions and activities in-game.
Despite these changes, it remains to be seen if this will be enough to win back players. The game’s initial reviews were harsh—players often shared their frustration on social media, calling out glitches and bugs that marred their experience. A recent survey revealed that 70% of players consider reviews when deciding on a game, making it crucial for Mindseye to rebuild its image.
Interestingly, Gerhard has mentioned external factors affecting the game’s launch. He claims the studio is investigating alleged sabotage related to Mindseye.
While the studio works to fix things, gamers are left weighing whether the new updates and price drop are worth a second look. With recent trends showing players leaning towards games that adapt and respond to feedback, time will tell how Mindseye evolves from here.
